THE HOLOCAUST AND ITS REPRESENTATION IN SPAIN

Proyecto HORES

The HORES Project, short for “The Holocaust and its Representation in Spain”, continues the research that Dr. María Jesús Fernández-Gil (University of Alcalá) began under the Excellence Grant for Permanent University Faculty (EPU/INV/020/015) in January 2021. Initially focused on the process of interpreting the Holocaust within Spanish literature, film and theatre, the research now expands to cover Spain’s entire creative landscape, from the earliest depictions to those appearing through 2024, the project’s founding year. The project’s ultimate goal is to analyse how this historical event has been represented in Spain, evaluating the extent of its international reach.
To this end, three additional researchers have joined, complementing the project’s Anglocentric and translation-focused lens with fresh perspectives. Other researchers have also contributed, and the team is open to collaboration with specialists to form an interdisciplinary group dedicated to using research to address global and societal challenges. Our objectives are fulfilled as we work to mitigate polarisation, hatred and extremism, fostering instead critical thinking, calm discourse, and reflection. Above all, we aim for our work to lay the groundwork for preserving memory.
